Translation isn't the enemy. And it isn't the answ

Translation isn't the enemy.
And it isn't the answer either.
Here's the reframe most ELL teachers need.

We've created a culture of guilt around translation.
'Don't let them rely on it.'
'Make them work in English.'
'Take the phone away.'
But here's what that misses...

There's a difference between a SCAFFOLD and a CRUTCH.
A scaffold is temporary support that gets removed.
A crutch is permanent support that prevents growth.
Translation can be either — depending on HOW you use it."Translation as a SCAFFOLD looks like:
✔ Used for comprehension, not production
✔ Decreases over time
✔ Has a clear exit plan
✔ Builds toward English independence

Translation as a CRUTCH looks like:
❌ Used the same way for years
❌ Never decreasing in frequency
❌ No plan for fading it out
❌ Student can't function without it"

The goal isn't 'no translation.'
The goal is intentional translation that builds toward independence.
