I had a newcomer from Bulgaria in my Chicago classroom who didn’t speak any English. When I asked for help, I was told “there’s nothing you can do – she’ll learn through immersion.”
That answer didn’t sit well with me.
After moving abroad and experiencing life as a second language learner myself in Panama, working in an international school with students from around the world, I saw what actually works. Newcomers who came into my classroom without English became fluent by year’s end.
The difference? Resources actually created for ELLs, not the same stuff that’s made for everyone else with an ELL sticker on the cover.
Real scaffolding, real differentiation, real cultural responsiveness.
I’m passionate about empowering educators to equip their English language learners – because when you teach with ELLs in mind, all students succeed.
My perspective comes from teaching in a low-income public school in Chicago and a private IB school in Panama, living abroad as a second language learner myself, and seeing what truly works for language development. I have my teaching degree with ESL endorsements and Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction.
But I’m not doing this alone. Inspiring Young Learners is backed by a dedicated team of former teachers who bring their own rich experiences to the table:
Always here for you and cheering you on.
