Have you ever heard the phrase, "You have to go slow to go fast?" 🐢🐇
This is so true when it comes to language learning and ELLs. As teachers we often feel pressure:
💙 to get moving onto the next thing

💙to stick to a pacing guide
💙from admin or team teachers

The truth is when we cover content, but do it too fast, or without the right supports, it actually makes the learning even more confusing for our ELLs. We may check off a box, but it's not worth it in the long run. ELLs need
💙slow, explicit teaching
💙visuals
💙sentence frames
💙shortened assignments
💙us to actually check for comprehension instead of just assuming and moving on.

If we are truly going to reach our ELLs, flexibility is huge. Though it's difficult to find the courage to stray from the norm or do what we feel is right in our hearts, It's up to us to recognize when we need to slow down and try something different.
